Worship

Worship is central to our life of faith.

At First Presbyterian Church. We believe that in worship, the community of faith gathers to praise God and to be strengthened to go into the world to share our faith. Our worship services are traditional but relevant, including beautiful music, meaningful sermons, and prayers. Communion is celebrated twice each month. Usually on the first Sunday of the month, and again during a healing prayer service on the third Wednesday.

Children are welcome at First Presbyterian Church! An unstaffed nursery is provided for the comfort and convenience of parents and their children. The church service can be heard through the sound system in the nursery. The nursery is located through the door of the annex, the third door on the left. For assistance or questions, please speak to any usher.

How do we worship?

Worship in Presbyterian churches is as diverse as the congregations that are their make-up. Some embrace contemporary Christian worship including vibrant music and other expressions of faith. Others are devoted to a more traditional style with age-old liturgy and hymns. At First Presbyterian Church Brunswick we desire to seek a balance, bringing in new celebrations while always resting on the rock of our foundations. We believe there is room for both. Therefore a service may feature readings and songs from contemporary PC(USA) worship guides, along with the ancient confessions and hymns of old. Our worship emphasizes the distinctive marks of the Reformed tradition: Corporate Confession of Sin, Corporate Affirmation of Faith, a Prayer for Illumination, the Proclamation of the Word, Prayers for the People, and the celebration of the Sacraments (Communion, or Eucharist and Baptism).

Jimmy Griffin

Pastor

Pastor Jimmy, a native of South Carolina, grew up in the Presbyterian Church and was confirmed at age 12. During his formative years, his family insured the development of strong roots in his faith, eventually leading to God’s call to ministry. As an adult, his life’s journey and explorations, guided by God’s grace, also found him in the Baptist and Episcopal traditions. Through this, the Spirit has developed in him a rich tapestry for mission and a heart for those still “seeking”. His leadership experiences along the way have included church and para-church Youth Ministry, Camp and Conference Center Ministry, College Ministry, and Pulpit Supply. After obtaining a Ph.D. and completing a 15-year career in full-time University teaching he went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Mission and Discipleship from the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary (PCUSA). His passions include time with family, and time pursuing outdoor adventures.
